The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has worked with the state’s Water Resources Management Board to issue boiling water notifications for Porter Ranch and parts of Granada hills following valve failures during repairs at pump stations.
The incident occurred when valves controlling the flow of water from the 10 million gallon tanks did not resume during routine maintenance, destroying water services to the area.
The recommendation, released Wednesday, warns residents north of the Rinal Distreat or 118 Highway to boil tap water, either farther and west of Balboa Boulevard, or use bottled water to drink, cook and brush their teeth.
LADWP advises customers to boil tap water for 1 minute and allow it to cool before use.
Those who are unable to boil water are instructed to disinfect using unscented liquid bleach.
For clear water, use 8 drops (1/8 tsp) of bleach in 1 gallon of water. For cloudy water, filter through a clean cloth and use 16 drops (1/4 teaspoon) of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Mix well. Stand for 30 minutes before use. Water may taste or smell like chlorine. This means disinfection has occurred.
Water disinfectant tablets can also be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Additionally, free bottled water is available daily from 7am to 7pm on the following distribution sites:
Holleigh Bernson Memorial Park, 20500 Sesnon Blvd., Northridge O’Melveny Park, 17300 Sesnon Blvd., intersection of Granada Hills Tampa Avenue and Sesnon Boulevard
Officials estimate that it can take up to a week to resolve, but warn that additional time may be required due to the complexity of the repair.
