The U.S. Border Patrol arrested 1,504 Iranians on the southern border during President Joe Biden’s term, with nearly half (729) of which were released to the United States, according to a senior customs and border source.
Bondi’s remarks reflect the statements of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a day’s notice that a day ago said the Iranian conflict is “stimulating an increase in the US threat environment.” The DHS cited the possibility of “mobilizing America’s militant potential independently into violence” if Iranian leaders called for it. The department also said anti-Semitic cyberattacks and incidents could increase.
Gonzalez asked Bondi about the threat of Iran’s “sleep cells” that the Attorney General said could “not talk about it in this environment.”
The line of questioning during hearings about the Department of Justice (DOJ) budget proposal came amid a rapidly evolving conflict in the Middle East where Trump chose to intervene over the weekend.

The DOJ brought charges against three men last year in connection with a murder plot of an employer allegedly born from Iran, including assassinating Trump and killing journalists before the 2024 election. One of the men remains large. He is an Afghan national, but is said to have been paid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, an Iran-based extremist group.
“The charges released today expose Iran’s continued brave attempts to target US citizens, including President Donald Trump, other government leaders and opposition critics of the Tehran administration,” FBI director Christopher Ray said at the time of the indictment.
