A brush fire broke out in the Big Bear area Monday morning at the start of a warm week in Southern California.
The gold fire in the San Bernardino National Forest was estimated to be around 10 acres. The fire began in an inaccessible part of the Holcomb Valley, north of Lake Big Bear.
The structure is not threatened. Details about how the fire began were not available immediately.
Firefighters were responding to scenes in the mountains of San Bernardino County. There, large plumes of dark smoke were seen for miles.

The fire started at the start of a hot and dry week in Southern California, where the risk of fire could increase. The Gifford Fires in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, the state’s largest active fires, are estimated to be over 65,000 acres.
Over 4,400 wildfires have been reported in California this year, up from 3,800 at this point last year. This year, over 221,100 acres have been burned, well over 83,200 acres until July 2024. The average over the five years of that time is 4,100 fires and 125,700 acres of combustion.
