After federal agents conducted immigration operations across Los Angeles on Friday, LA Mayor Karen Bass, other city leaders and Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a federal suspension, calling the attack cruel and chaotic.
US lawyer Bill Essay confirmed on Friday, NBC Los Angeles that federal agents were offering search warrants in Los Angeles fashion districts as part of a “step-up effort” to enforce immigration laws.
“My office has prepared a search warrant for certain companies that are likely to use fictitious documents to hire people,” the essayri said.
Mayor Karen Bass visited the headquarters in the atmosphere of a clothing company where Friday’s rattle-like immigrant raids were attacked, like the Los Angeles immigrant community.
“It harbors the fear of the community. What happened here is bad enough, but the way it spreads across the community isn’t sure where people are safe,” Bass said.
“Graduation, high school graduation was happening nearby. How do those parents feel? Do they feel safe going to graduate?” Bass said he added that she had discovered something outrageous that she couldn’t accept the attack.
Eunisses Hernandez, a Los Angeles city councillor who represents the Westlake area, has expressed fear that federal agents may be “escalating” their tactics.
“They swooped quickly without warning and left just as quickly,” Hernandez said at a city council meeting Friday.
“It’s coming to our neighborhood,” the councillor said. “Know your rights. Plug into your community. Educate yourself. We’re literally talking about people who are being lured, disappearing, and their families are disbanding.”
Governor Newsom also criticized the attack on social media, calling it a chaotic and reckless one.
“To continue a chaotic federal sweep across California to meet any arrest quota is as reckless as they are cruel,” Newsom said. “Donald Trump’s disruption is eroding trust, tearing families apart, and undermining workers and industries that make use of the American economy.”
L.A. County superintendent Hilda Solis also said the attack was “deeply intrusive” and that ICE agents targeted some of LA’s most vulnerable residents. “
“The individuals detained are hardworking Angeleno, who contributes every day to our local economy and workforce,” Solis said. “Los Angeles County continues to work to maintain its status with the immigrant community and provides support through its network of immigration offices and nonprofit partners.”
The Los Angeles Police Department has repeatedly not cooperated with federal agencies’ immigrant raids as California and Los Angeles are sanctuary entities.
“I want to make that clear: LAPD is not involved in enforcing citizen immigrants,” said LAPD chief Jim McDonnell. His department said it banned officers from initiating police actions based on their first immigrant status since 1979.
