Topanga business owners and residents held a rally on Sunday, demanding that staff members reopen Topanga Canyon Boulevard after months of closure.
Boulevard has been closed since the fire in January and has caused major damage from the storm in February.
Residents, a lifeline in Topanga, say the closure has caused great challenges for everyone in the community.
“All we have is a little mom and a pop shop in Topanga. At the moment, there’s no traffic so they’re having a lot of trouble,” said Adam Roberts, who lives in Topanga.
The rain from Tuesday to Wednesday brought mud and debris to Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Malibu. Lauren Coronado is reporting NBC4 News at 6am on February 5th, 2025.
According to Caltrans, the approximately four miles of stretch from Grandview Drive to PCH remains closed for safety reasons.
The agency says it plans to reopen the roads as soon as they are safe and will coordinate in collaboration with California Highway Patrol, utilities and local public agencies. So far, they have removed more than 8,600 cubic yards of mud and debris after the February storm.
Some Topanga residents understand the need for closure, but they hope to access at least one lane.
“It’s our kids’ drains. For me, I take Paris high school students to practice, and she and I spend three or four hours in the car, just for track practice,” Tamara Gould said.
At the moment, Caltrans has not set a date for resuming.
