Eggs sold at Walmart stores in California and other grocery stores in eight other states are reminiscent of the outbreak of salmonella that have become ill in dozens of cases.

The August Egg Company in Hilmer, California recalled a carton of 1.7 million brown cage-free, brown certified organic eggs due to the potential salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration announced Friday.

The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and local health officials have linked eggs sold under multiple brand names to an outbreak of salmonella that has made at least 79 people sick in seven states. Of these, 21 require hospitalization, the CDC reports.

Which eggs were recalled?

The eggs were distributed to Arizona, California, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming from early May to mid-May this year.

It is available on sale by date 4 June 2025 at Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less and Ralphs locations, according to the FDA. Eggs distributed at Walmart locations in all nine states are on sale from March 4, 2025 to June 19, 2025.

The FDA notice states that all recalled eggs have a P-6562 or CA5330 plant code, and Julian’s dates are between 32 and 126 printed on cartons or packages, either fiber or plastic.

“It is important to know that when the processing plants identified this concern, we immediately began diverting all eggs from the plants to spawning facilities. It pasteurizes eggs and kills pathogens,” August Egg Company said in a statement. “The August Egg Company’s internal food safety team is conducting its own rigorous review to identify what measures can be established to prevent this situation from repeating. We are committed to implementing all the corrective actions needed to address this issue completely and to ensure that this does not happen again.”

Salmonella outbreaks are disgusting with dozens of people

The CDC said that while the true numbers could be greater despite the shock, the CDC reports that almost 80 confirmed cases of salmonella are associated with recalled eggs. Some people who became ill after salmonella infection do not need treatment. This means that they will not be tested and the cases will not be reported.

Illness is reported between late February and mid-May, with patients ranging from 1 to 90 years old. Thirty people were interviewed and reported that 27 people would eat eggs before they got sick.

Most of the total of 63 cases as of Sunday were reported in California. Nevada and Washington each confirmed four cases linked to recalled eggs, while Arizona has reported three cases. Nebraska and New Jersey each recorded two, while Kentucky reported one case.

What is Salmonella?

This is caused by the Salmonella bacteria that CDC presume. This causes 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the United States each year.

According to the CDC, Salmonella infection is generally associated with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Symptoms can begin 6 hours to 6 days after ingesting the bacteria. Most people can recover without treatment within 4-7 days.

The illness can be more severe for young children, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems. According to the CDC, treatment or hospitalization may be required. Infectious diseases can only be diagnosed through clinical testing of human stool, body tissue, or fluids.
