A civil lawsuit was filed against the Las Virgenes Unified School District by the family of a Calabasas High School student who claims she is a victim of serious bullying and harassment.
The student is only identified by a family lawyer as a 15-year-old PJ, claiming that he secretly took a photo of her while another student was in the shower before distributing the images among his classmates. Family members say both school officials and law enforcement were notified shortly after the incident, but they alleged that the school was unable to take any meaningful actions.
In a statement to the KTLA, PJ described the emotional toll that the situation had on her.
“It was a truly traumatic and embarrassing experience for me. It changed me and made me mature. I’m always looking over my shoulder. Who saw me, who saw me, I was called a liar, a manipulator.
Rather than being protected, PJ’s family claims that leaking photos has led to the target of ongoing bullying and emotional abuse at school.
Las Virgenes Unified Schulidect responded in a statement from Superintendent Dr. Dan Stepenosky, highlighting that the district takes the allegations seriously and follows appropriate protocols.
“Student safety is our number one priority. When allegations of off-campus conduct brought the administration’s attention, we immediately reported the issue to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office. LASD took the issue seriously and assigned it to a special victim unit that conducted a full investigation.”
PJ’s family believes that school staff were unable to provide her appropriate support and allowed the toxic environment to spread.
The LA County Sheriff’s Office has not released details regarding the results of the investigation. The lawsuit is expected to increase scrutiny about how schools handle student privacy violations and deal with digital bullying claims.
