Memorial Day is visible, summer is officially on the horizon, and international travel is once again heartfelt for millions of Americans and visitors to the US, but this year’s federal budget cuts, economic uncertainty and many changes in immigration policy could dampen vacation plans. In fact, recent data from US Customs and Border Protection confirms long customs waiting times at many major airports during the summer travel season.

Our own Los Angeles International (LAX) airport recorded the longest average immigration line wait time of 31.8 minutes, delaying 12.8% of travelers over an hour, according to a new report issued by Upgrade Point. Although undoubtedly bad, the customs at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) that is technically slotted second on the penultimate slotted list, keeps travelers waiting for an average of 31.7 minutes, creating the highest share (13.6%) in the country. Meanwhile, despite a significant drop in traffic, Nashville International Airport (BNA) performed third worst with the worst performance, with waits averaged 31.1 minutes.
Want to trim airport opening hours? Florida’s Entry Point Palm Beach International (PBI) lines up visitors for just 3.5 minutes. Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) approaches his home, with an average wait of 6.4 minutes, with the majority of travelers (93.7%) waiting in under 15 minutes.
Overall, non-citizens often face the longest test of patience at all major airports, at peak times, at 30-40 minutes or more. In contrast, American citizens usually wait less than 20 minutes. It is no surprise that prejudice policies produce blatant bureaucracy.
