California authorities on vigilance after bombing Iran – NBC Los Angeles

Local and state officials were monitoring potential radioactive fallout on Sunday after US forces bombed three nuclear facilities in Iran.

In a speech to the nation on Saturday, President Donald Trump confirmed that B-2 stealth bombers and other fighters had carried out the attacks, saying the damage caused to Iran’s nuclear weapons program would “much easier” to future US attacks.

“After the bombings in Iran, Los Angeles is closely monitoring threats to public safety,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a Saturday post on X. We will remain vigilant about protecting our communities. ”

Gov. GavinNewsom said state officials are also on alert

“Following the president’s actions in Iran, the California state threat assessment center is actively monitoring the potential impacts of California, he said in a post in X.

The US decision to intervene in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran led to at least one downtown demonstration on Saturday.

Meanwhile, local Democrats aren’t necessarily opposed to the target of the attack, but they have had problems with the president’s decision to bypass Congress’ approval.

“Trump’s attack on Iran has hit three reported nuclear targets, and I think it’s equivalent to a declaration of war,” said Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles. “It reminds us that the President must come before Congress to seek approval before the declaration of war, as the President must face members of Congress.

“This lawsuit by the president is typical of the president. The United States agreed with Iran at one time, and that agreement was closely monitored. But Trump withdrew from the agreement when he took office.”

Under that agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan, Iran has agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for ease of US sanctions and other punitive measures. The contract was in effect from January 16, 2016 until the US withdrawal in 2018 during the first Trump administration.

Just a few days after he said he would give it for weeks, President Donald Trump pulled the trigger on bombing three Iranian nuclear sites. NBC4 News’ Conan Nolan reports at 11pm on June 21, 2025.

“Trump is out of control and has not contributed to establishing peace,” Waters’ statement continued. “It was my understanding that Trump would give two weeks of consideration to his response to Israel’s attack on Iran and his response to Iran’s attack on Israel, but he has not.

“This president has to be stopped. Me and my members of Congress must face this issue as soon as they return to Congress. We need peaceful negotiations, not another war.”

Rep. Mike Levin of D-Carlsbad warned that Trump’s actions could drag the United States into another costly war.

“We cannot allow the President to engage the United States in another deadly, free war without constitutional authority,” Levin said. “Iran should never get nuclear weapons. But the strength of democracy begins with the constitution. If the president came to Congress, the majority could have allowed him to strike. But that’s not what happened.”

Senator Alex Padilla also criticized the one-sided nature of the president’s actions.

“Dismantling Iran’s nuclear weapons program is essential to America’s national security and is crucial to Israel’s security and the rights that exist,” a senior Democrat senator in California said on Sunday. “However, it is unacceptable that the President ignored his constitutional responsibility to seek and secure Congressional approval before commencing these strikes.

President Trump must come before Congress before any further military action is taken. It’s not just a matter of process – it’s a matter of law. Trump risks America’s lives and ignites a wider war in the region that he himself repeatedly warns. Therefore, all diplomatic channels must be exhausted and escalation must be contained in the region by working with allies and partners. ”

President Donald Trump held a presidential speech on Saturday night to confirm that the military strikes “completely erase” three Iranian nuclear sites and called for Iran’s top leader to “make peace” or face further military action.

Meanwhile, Republican Orange County Rep. Young Kim, r-mission viejo, has expressed his support for the attack.

“Military target actions [Saturday] It is necessary for Iran’s nuclear sites to block Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and save lives,” Kim said.
Restore peace through strength and are happy to be safe on the way home. ”

Rep. Darrell Issa of R-Escondido also expressed support.

“Tonight, @Realdonaldtrump shows the world the true meaning of peace through strength, and America’s strength is enabling peace with Iran for the first time in 46 years,” Issa posted on X.

The US bomb fell on Saturday at Iranian atomic sites in Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz.

The first attack on Iran came on June 13 when Israeli airstrikes targeted nuclear and military facilities as well as Iranian generals and nuclear scientists. The Washington-based Iranian human rights group reportedly killed at least 657 people, including 263 civilians, and reportedly injured more than 2,000 people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s goal is to eliminate the “existential threat” to Iran’s nuclear program and the arsenal of ballistic missiles, and that the attack will continue “as long as it is necessary.”

Protesters gathered at Pershing Square in downtown after a US attack spread across the Los Angeles area.

“The people of Los Angeles are taking them to downtown towns and calling for an end to the war with Iran, our immigrants and Gaza!” organizers paid attention to it on Instagram. “We, alongside over 30 organizations, show the world that LA is refusing to US military intervention and make it clear that our movement will continue to grow, strengthen and unite in the conflict between Zionism and US imperialism.
