Despite hundreds of attendees opposed the establishment of plaques at the Huntington Beach Central Library to refer to President Donald Trump, the city committee voted unanimously to advance the gesture.
Purposed to commemorate the library’s 50th anniversary, plaques feature the magical, charming, galvanized and adventurous slogan. The slogan is arranged in the style of acrostic poetry and reads as “Maga,” a synonym for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
The less subtle hint to Trump appears to be an entirely new slogan created specifically for plaque, with no official language or brand identity for Huntington Beach or its public library system. Searching for phrases on the city’s website did not yield any relevant results.

Matt Sabo, a reporter for the Daily Pilot, published under the Los Angeles Times umbrella, attended Tuesday’s meeting, explaining the overwhelming opposition to the city’s motion.
“Over 300 emails opposed this were against,” Szabo wrote in Bluesky. “And so are most of the overflow crowds.”
Among those speaking out against the city’s plans was former councillor Natalie Moser. He described the memorial as “political propaganda disguised as a celebration.”
“While libraries are spaces for knowledge, community and inclusion and not tools for political messaging, this plaque inserts control into spaces where division, exclusion and control promotes learning and unity I will,” Moser said. “Using ‘MAGA’s acrostics will inject partisan ideology into public institutions that belong to everyone, not just political movements. ”
On Reddit, one user shared a message to a committee voting on plaque on the dedicated Huntington Beach Subreddit. The term “maga” is a divisive language.
Messaging aside, the cost of the plaque itself is also a topic of concern for those who opposed the city’s plans, and whether the money spent on design, manufacturing and installation will be spent on the library’s overall mission? I was able to question whether it was.
Tuesday’s vote marked the latest clash between Huntington Beach City Council and its library system. Last year, the council considered outsource library operations to a third-party company.
In 2023, the city required librarians to review books for children and relocate people containing “sexually explicit” materials. A report from Laist found that most of the flag-painted books focused on health, the human body and adolescence.
Despite the undoubtedly hostile relationship between the council and the library system, Plaque is the name of the current council members and the community, two organizations that have the final say in the establishment of the library’s 50th anniversary. and the name of the Library Services Committee.

After public comments, the board approved the plaque with unanimous support.
Jeanne Paris, a member of the Community and Library Service Committee, said it dispels the notion that the use of “maga” in plaques is merely a coincidence.
The enemy crowd booed the emotions, Zabo said.
KTLA contacted the Huntington city media team twice for comments, including whether the slogan had previously been used in official abilities.
