The California Department of Motor Vehicles is opening several offices an hour earlier this spring to help people who have not yet obtained their actual IDs by the May deadline.
On May 7th, people boarding domestic flights or entering safe federal facilities such as courts must have an actual ID, passport or another approved federal document.
Monday-18 DMV offices will open at 7am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday through June 27th.
Officials said Californians who want to upgrade their driver’s license to an actual ID, but who already have a US passport or other federally approved documents can wait until their license is renewed.
Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005, improving security in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks and minimizing fraud. Federal officials repeatedly pushed back dates when travelers needed a new federal compliant identification card.
To apply for an actual ID, Californians must fill out the online application at realid.dmv.ca.gov and upload the required documents. You will then need to go to the DMV office, bring in the uploaded documents and complete the application.
Documents required include valid passports or birth certificates to prove your identity, and those certified by California residents such as utility bills and bank statements. You also need a Social Security number.
The DMV charges a $45 fee for your actual ID driver’s license.
Early hours are not available on Wednesdays when the DMV office is open from 9am to 5pm
