California Governor says “Democracy is under attack” – NBC Los Angeles

Governor Gavin Newsom, who calls President Donald Trump a threat to the American way of life, portrayed federal military intervention in Los Angeles as the beginning of Trump’s far broader efforts to overturn the political and cultural norms at the heart of the country’s democracy.

On Tuesday evening, he said the possibility of a 2028 Democratic presidential candidate was that the arrival of city security and marines at Trump’s direction was not just a protest following a string of federal authorities’ attacks. Instead, he said it is part of a calculated “war” aimed at overturning the foundations of the White House society and focusing its strength.

“California may be the first, but obviously it won’t end here. There are other states next,” the gloomy newspaper warned of sitting in front of the US and California flags. “Democracy is next. Democracy is attacked right in front of our eyes. This moment of fear has arrived.”

As heads of a critical democracy known as the epicenter of Trump’s resistance, the newspapers and the Republican president have long been enemies. However, the governor’s speech at Primetime argued that Trump was not merely a threat to democracy, but was actively working to break down the guardrail leading to the establishment of the country.

“He declared a war. The war on culture, history, science and knowledge itself “he is outlawing news organizations and attacking the First Amendment.”

Newsom added that Trump is attacking law firms and the judicial department. It is the “basic of orderly civil society.”

“It’s time for us all to stand up,” Newsom said. “What Donald Trump wants most is your loyalty, your silence, your conspiracy in this moment. Don’t succumb to him.”

His speech came on the same day Newsom asked the court to make an emergency stop on the troops and to halt them to help federal immigration agents. The judge chose not to take control immediately, giving the Trump administration several days to continue those activities before Thursday’s hearing.

Trump has revitalized more than 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines over city and state leadership objections, but the Marines have yet to be found in Los Angeles, and the security forces have limited engagement with protesters. They were originally deployed to protect federal buildings.

Newsom’s speech concluded several days of acidic interaction between Trump and Newsom. This appeared to support Newsom’s arrest if the president interfered with enforcement of federal immigration. “I think that’s great. Gavin likes advertising, but I think it’s great,” Trump told reporters.

Over the years, Trump has threatened to be entangled with California’s long-term homeless crisis, vowed to withhold federal wildfire aid as political leverage in the water rights conflict, calling on police to warn people that “your child is in danger.”

The Rebellion Act gives the president limited authority to deploy troops within the United States, but its use without the demands of the state remains legally ambiguous.

Trump enjoys shaming the governor for two terms and former mayor of San Francisco, often calling him the government.

Trump claimed the city was at risk of being covered in violent protesters, but Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have called federal intervention an unnecessary and potentially dangerous overreaction.

The demonstrations are primarily concentrated in the city’s downtown hub. The demonstrations spread to other cities around the state and across the country, including Dallas and Austin, Texas, Chicago and New York City, attracting 1,000 people and multiple arrests.

Trump has revealed the possibility of invoking rebellion laws that would approve the president to deploy troops within the United States to curb rebellion and domestic violence or enforce the law in certain circumstances. This is one of the most extreme emergencies available to the US president.

“If there’s a riot, I’ll certainly call it. We’ll see,” he said from the oval office.
