California homeowners are running out of time to apply for grants that will help them remodel their homes seismically before the next big one arrives
Eligible homeowners can receive up to $3,000 by applying to the California Housing Mitigation Program website, operated by the California Earthquake Department, through March 26th.
Earthquake remodeling grants allow homeowners to secure their homes on the foundations, cover crawl spaces well, and make the structures resistant to earthquakes.
According to the California Earthquake Department, an estimated 1.2 million homes in California were built in high altitude areas that were at risk of collapse or destruction before 1980.
Houses built before 1940 are even more vulnerable. Many of them have crawl space.
“The crawl space has studs of less than seven feet and are not properly secured to the foundation, and not properly decorated with plywood.
Typical costs for a home remodel range from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on the location and size of the home.
The average grant homeowners’ value may not cover the entire bill, but Mafay reminded him in California that not preparing for a major earthquake would cost them even more if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“For $3,000, renovations are on average around $5,200 statewide, so there are spending by homeowners, but it’s very important to note that the expected damage is much greater than that,” she said.
Supplementary subsidies are also available for low-income households. This will cover all costs of remodeling your home.

The state agency is also helping to find licensed contractors in more than 1,100 nearby areas by postcode.
