The winner of the largest Mega Millions Jackpot in California history was identified by lottery officials on Monday.
Rosemary Casalotti purchased tickets for the December 27th Mega Million Draw at Cottonwood’s Sunshine Food and Gas Circle K, just off the five expressways in Shasta County. Casalotti’s ticket is the only ticket to rival all six numbers, and she became the sole winner of the incredible $1.2 billion jackpot.
Casalotti has chosen to receive the award as a lump sum valued at over $571 million in federal taxes.
California lottery tickets are mandated by the Internal Revenue Service to withhold federal taxes on many awards. There is no California or local tax withholding.
Circle K receives a maximum retail bonus of $1 million to sell lucky tickets.
Casalotta refused to attend the lottery press conference and announced her name, but the California lottery spokesman was her over the phone.
“I was able to speak with Rosemary on the phone following her victory, and I can definitely tell you how grateful she is and how happy she is to have won this money and supported public schools,” said Carolyn Becker, a spokesman for the California lottery.
According to California’s public disclosure law, the name of the jackpot winner is a public record. This includes the name and location of the retailer who sold the winning ticket, the date of the winning draw, and the amount including total installments and net installments.
