California Lt. Colonel Eleni Kunarakis, who began his governor’s bid more than two years ago, has instead dropped out and is running for the state’s treasurer.
“At this point, I believe we can have the greatest impact by focusing on California’s financial future,” Democrats said in a statement.
Fox News Digital sent an email to the Kounalakis campaign early Friday morning, requesting comment from the Lieutenant Governor.

In a statement last week, former Vice President Kamala Harris announced that he “seriously thought” in the election, “I’m looking for a governor, but I decided not to do so.”
The 2026 Governor’s Contest is widely open as Gavin Newsom, the current Golden State Governor, is a Democrat serving his second term, and cannot be implemented again due to the state’s two-term restrictions.

“The governor cannot serve more than one condition,” the state constitution provides.
Newsom, who took office in 2019, survived the governor’s recall election in 2021 and won the election in 2022.
