First Fox – The Justice Department has confirmed by next week that California public high schools will not allow trans athletes to compete in women’s sports, and has facilitated a federal investigation into states over Title IX compliance.

Halham Dillon, the Attorney General who leads the DOJ Civil Rights Division, said in a letter obtained by Fox News Digital that public school districts must “certify in writing” by June 9th.

“Depriving female students of athletic opportunities and benefits under the sexual protection clause, deliberately depriving them would constitute unconstitutional sex discrimination under the equal protection clause,” Dhillon warned in a letter obtained by Fox News Digital.

California high school students ask state officials to ban women’s sports trans athletes at controversial meetings

Hermet Dillon, a candidate to become Attorney General, testified at a confirmation hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee in Darksenville on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

The Inter-California Governance Federation governs the state’s public and private high school sports, with bylaws requiring members to recognize the gender identity of the sport.

All students must be able to participate in ‘school sports’ in a way that matches their gender identity, regardless of the gender listed on the student’s records.

Dillon, a former California-based Conservative attorney, said the certifications he seeks from the public school district will help ensure Title IX compliance and avoid legal liability.

Her demand is employing public school districts for the Inter-Calif. Federation of Governance, an entity that is necessary for schools to comply with to participate in state athletic competitions.

DOJ intervenes in California trans athlete controversy while Trump is monitoring women’s athletics championships

Fox News Digital has contacted the executive director of the California Interscholastic Federation for comment.

Dillon’s move comes after she and a US lawyer for the Central District of California announced last week that she was investigating the California Interstate federal and other public agencies to see whether state laws contradict Trump’s interpretation of Title IX.

When Trump took office, he ordered federal agencies to implement Title IX in a way that eliminates gender identity after the Biden administration tried to reinterpret the law.

Passed in 1972, Title IX is a groundbreaking civil rights law designed to prevent sex discrimination in schools. Former President Barack Obama created the first attempt to reinterpret Title IX at the end of his term, although unenforceable, by directing schools that received the federal fund to allow trans students to use the bathroom and participate in sports that cater to gender identity.

Trump neglected those efforts in his first term and worked with former education secretary Betsy DeVos to create new rules to require schools within the education sector to comply with the longstanding meaning of Title IX.

Former President Joe Biden embraced gender identity and reimagined Title IX as the pillar of the presidency by moving to unraveling new rules for the Trump administration. However, Biden met with numerous injunctions and was unable to obtain a version of Title IX from the ground.

Now, Trump is actively trying to enforce rules for his first term. He signed a series of executive orders focusing on the “biological reality of sex,” as one order explained, and his agency sent letters of demand and opened federal inquiries to states that resisted administration efforts.

In addition to targets in California, the DOJ sued Maine for Title IX, citing transgender athletes who have fallen out of federal law compliance and won the women’s pole-type competition in February.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills, D., downplayed the issue and told local news at one point that her state had “two trans athletes.”

Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) shows openness to Trump’s position that trans athletes competing in women’s sports are unfair and unfair to Newsom’s liberal foundational disappointment.

Newsom recently said he supported a new pilot initiative by the California Interstate Federation, allowing female track and field athletes eligible for future state championships if they are evacuated to transgender athletes.
