California Republican lawmakers remained uneasy after a handful were suddenly kicked out of a vital legislative committee by Democrat Robert Rivas.
Congressional minority leader James Gallagher (R-Yuba City) suggested that the move could be “retaliation” against Republicans in opposition to fundraising to “hold Trump” states and criticising Democrats’ handling of issues such as livelihoods, insurance, wildfires and energy rises.
“This is a new dog house move that will make these kinds of changes if the Democratic leader is upset with you,” Gallagher said.
Gallagher said he had a “good conversation” with Rivas after the announcement was made, but he was mostly explained about the changes. He said some JABS Republican lawmakers who cooked on social media “may rub some people the wrong way.”
As a speaker, Rivas has the authority to appoint and remove members of the committee at any time. Last week there have been more than a dozen committee changes affecting both Republicans and Democrats. Commission reallocation is common in Congress and could permeate politics. Democrats retain the legislative supermajority and give Republicans little political power.
“The speakers routinely address the needs of the committee throughout the year. His goal is to ensure that members play an optical role, work effectively and deliver to Californians at all times.”
Among those removed were assembly members Carl Demaio (R-San Diego) and Alexandra Macdeo (R-Tulare) who were expelled from the Congressional Budget Committee, and Joe Patterson (R-Rocklin), who lost their position as vice-chairman of the Congressional Health Committee. Three Democrats also lost seats on the committee. All committees still have Republican vice-chairmen.
DeMaio, who has been outspoken on social media platform X in recent weeks, said that on social media platform X, which has a considerable supporter, he warned him to “dial back it” after a controversial budget hearing that it had been widely publicized where he criticized Gavin Newsom’s spending plans. DeMaio also describes the budget Covid-19 outreach program as “So 2020.”
Other Republicans that were deleted included lawmakers Bill Essayri (R-Corona) and David Tangipa (R-Sacramento). Some Republicans were removed from their position, but they were also appointed to a new committee.
Macedo questioned the speaker’s motivation behind removing her as a member of the Budget Committee. She was also replaced by another Republican as vice-chairman of the Government Organising Committee. In addition to the removal, Macedo was appointed to replace the essay with the vice-chairman of the Election Commission.
“I’ve worked so hard to educate myself on issues…I don’t think crime is consistent with punishment,” she said.
On Monday, Patterson expressed surprise at the modifications he learned while at the gym. “As an elected official in a minority party, you should be expected to talk about what is wrong with the actions of the majority,” he said.
