California surf instructor, 24, recovers after arms that were amputated in a horrific accident

The Ventura surf instructor, whose arm was amputated in a collision with an Amtrak train earlier this month, is recovering after a rigorous surgery to hit the limbs again.

The horrifying July 7 incident unfolded before 5:30pm when 24-year-old Ventura native Eliea Boyd pushed an 80-pound electric bike across a railroad track near Seaward Avenue.

“There was no train corner. It was like that for three seconds when the train happened,” she told KTLA’s Sandra Mitchell. “As the train passed, I happened to have my hands on my bike. The train barely cut it off.

Just two weeks after her traumatic injury, her arms were slings from wrist to shoulder, and the 24-year-old smiled, said she remembered not looking down and not looking at her arms.

Luckily, a retired firefighter was walking with Boyd, and police and paramedics arrived on the scene and rushed to the hospital, telling the first responder to look for her arm.

Police later said her amputated limbs were near the crash site.

Boyd was airlifted to UC Irvine Medical Center where she endured 10 hours of surgery, but with at least two surgeries scheduled over the next few weeks, she says she’s already back on her arm.

“It’s something that feels like an impact of energy,” she told KTLA. “I feel internally that it’s healing.”

The 24-year-old, an avid surfer and surfing coach, knows there is a challenging path to recovery, but she says she is already looking forward to the day she’s back at the sea.

“As soon as I can get into the water, I get on my surfboard,” she said. That’s all I dream of here at the hospital. I just want to go back to the water and surf. ”

While she stays in the hospital and waits under additional surgery, GofundMe is organized for Boyd
