Authorities say California’s fire season has begun, with more than dozens of wildfires ignited since Saturday.
Officials warn that the fiery events of the past three days are preludes to what comes in the coming months as the state moves from dry winters and springs to what is expected to be hot summers and falls. And while most of the ongoing fires are in Southland, the crew is also staging in Northern California. There, danger warnings will be effective in some counties until 8pm on Tuesday.
Here is the latest information on the current fires burning Golden State, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention.
Riverside County Wolf Fire
The rapidly growing wolf fire erupted Sunday afternoon, rapidly growing to over 2,400 acres, forcing evacuation and road closures near the ban.
Firefighters had established 30% containment by 5:45pm on Monday. 300 firefighters, four helicopters and 70 engines continued to work to get the Blaze that began in the old Idyllwild Road and the Wolfskill Truck Trail area.
Evacuation orders were in effect in most areas banned south of Interstate 10 on Monday. Maps of communities affected by orders can be found here. The shelter for affected households was established at Hemet High School, 41701 E. Stetson Ave., with an animal shelter site at 581 S. Grand Avenue in San Jacinto.
Juniper Fire, Riverside County
The Juniper fire ignited around 11:30am on Monday in an unincorporated mountainous area in Perris, prompting evacuation orders and warnings in Camelot Hills and nearby communities of Hope.
A CAL Fire spokesperson said evacuation orders were applied to 633 people and 261 structures on Monday evening, with the evacuation warning affecting another 2,507 people and 1,579 structures.
Firefighters stopped progressing forward, reaching 30% containment of the 688 acres of fire by 5:45pm Monday. 24 engines, two helicopters, a total of 183 firefighters continued to fight the flames of the territory on the steep hillside. The crew were set to stay on the scene overnight and Tuesday to enhance containment.
The “Care and Reception Centre” for affected families was founded at Citrus Hill High School, 18150 Wood Road, Perris. A map of the evacuation area can be found here.
San Bernardino County Lake Fire
Firefighters burned near Silverwood Lake Monday evening, reaching 40% containment in a 483-acre lake fire. The fire ignited around 4pm on Saturday near State Highway 173 and Cedar Springs Dam Trail.
Evacuation warnings were enabled in the hillside north of Silverwood Lake and south of the Lugo community, but the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area remains generally closed. A map of the affected area can be obtained here.
Crews stopped the fire’s forward spread Monday morning, focusing on strengthening control lines in areas where the fire is still active.
Simsfire, Lassen County
Crews reached 25% containment Monday evening in the 223-acre Sims fire in Lassen County. The fire ignited around 1:30pm Monday along McAfee Road in Harlon near the Honey Lake and the California Nevada border. 60 staff and one helicopter will be assigned to the flames.
Riverside County Mindifier
Firefighters strongly treated the 103-acre Mindy fire in a remote area in Riverside County on Monday, urging the lifting of an area evacuation order. The brush fire caught fire near Decorcy Road and Mindirane north of Aguanga before 4pm on Sunday. The fire had included 80% by Monday evening.
Mandalay Fire, Riverside County
Firefighters reached 100% containment on Monday in the 83-acre Mandalay fire. The flames ignited in the Brassy area west of Riverside Municipal Airport, just before 3:30pm on Sunday.
Smiley Fire, San Bernardino County
Firefighters reached 100% containment on Monday in an 83-acre smiley fire. The fire began on Saturday at the intersection of Santioteo Canyon Road and Smiley Road south of the Redlands.
Fires less than 30 acres
The 26-acre Kenyon fire ignited in Shasta County on Sunday. The 26-acre quarry caught fire in San Joaquin County Monday. The 24-acre perch fire was in Siskiyou County Monday. The 20-acre Marysville fire ignited in Yuba County on Sunday. The 20-acre Lulano fire caught fire in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday and is completely trapped. The 19-acre cable fire ignited Sunday in San Bernardino County.
