The very gentle attitude of the 9-year-old girl during an emergency call to 911 helped law enforcement respond quickly to her home after the break-in.
“Someone is breaking into my house,” the child can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher before 6am on Friday.
Westminster Police Station said the girl and her family were at home when they broke down a window downstairs and entered the settlement. The girl’s father, who was in the kitchen at the time, confronted the intruders and Pepper sprayed him before dragging him out of the house.
The child was able to call 911 quickly, so officers arrived at the scene within three minutes. They found the suspect in the backyard of a nearby house and took him into custody.
Police have identified the suspect as 34-year-old Jorge Mendoza Diaz. He was arrested for robbery at a home.
“We are extremely pleased that the actions of both the nine-year-old and her father were preventing the situation from becoming much more serious,” said Westminster chief Darrin Renee. “Based on her performance, I invite her to become a member of WPD as a police officer or dispatcher when she grows up.”
