Cameras and spare batteries disguised as plants outside the house could be robbery tools, officials say

Chino Hills residents, who saw something strange in their driveway, recently called sheriff’s deputies who discovered hidden cameras disguised as fake plants.

The devices found on March 2 are similar to other equipment used by robbers who want to learn about the victim’s schedule without gaming their neighborhood.

The camera was equipped with a large portable battery, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release. A Canon Lane resident discovered a portable battery, and deputies found a second battery wrapped in bright green leaves that supplied wires to the camera.

The agent receives the item as evidence and works to determine who installed the device. Investigators say the cameras are part of the growth trends used by robbers, but they did not provide any further information about the incident. It is unclear whether the device can send data over a Wi-Fi signal or if there is an SD card that needs to acquire the device to display the video on the camera.

Residents told news station KTLA that robbers broke into several homes last year.

Similar devices have appeared in multiple cities and neighborhoods in California and other parts of the country. Some devices are surrounded by bushes, buried in the front yard or placed in planters targeting the home.

Law enforcement has attributed at least one case in Glendale to the “robbery tourism” ring, but no other devices have been billed.

Anyone with information about the incident can call Chino Hills Police Station at (909) 364-2000.

Residents can take an aggressive approach to combat robbers to infiltrate their homes using technology.

Practice regularly inspecting the area around the outside of your home and paying attention to suspicious activities in your neighborhood.
If you discover hidden cameras, call your local police agency immediately to document and collect your device.
Shifting from wireless to wired. Anyone who wants to stop Wi-Fi jamming can ask an internet provider or electrician to secure the robbery alarm system and connect it to the router via a cable.
It may be wise to put your electronic tracker in some valuables. The Los Angeles Police Department recommends Apple Air Tags or similar trackers. It can be placed inside objects such as wallets and jackets and tracked on your smartphone.
Protects circuit breakers. Residents can invest in padlocks in electric circuit boxes to block easy access for robbers who want to interfere with the alarm system.
Make it difficult to break in. Police recommend that anyone with sliding doors have a metal bar on the bottom to block the opening and install motion sensor lighting when in anyone’s home.
