This is a difficult place to spell the winning words at last year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee. And, by the way, that’s already wrong.
Below is your chance to spell correctly along with other past words used to crown the champion’s speller ahead of the national spelling bee kicked off on May 27th.
Here are the words of Scripps’ victory from a recent competition. Don’t make any mistakes, check the number of characters that pass through each one.
The four-day competition in Maryland will feature 243 spellers, marking the 100th anniversary of Superbe.
As the event is underway, a word selection panel gathers together to discuss the words chosen for the bees. According to a group of panelists, the goal is to build a list of words that are not ashamed to challenge dozens of middle and elementary school elderly competitors, allowing them to produce only champions within a two-hour broadcast window for the final.
As for Spellers, they master roots and linguistic patterns and explore years of ranges to compete on the national stage in the most distant range of Merriam Webster’s private dictionary. Each year, the words chosen for the bees are becoming increasingly stiff and abstracted as the panel tries to avoid the 8-way tie in 2019.
Here’s everything you need to know about the spelling bees this year.
Why is it called a spelling bee?
The origin of the word “bee” is still debated, but according to Merriam Webster, who has been involved in the competition since 1957, bee means “voluntary help given by a neighbor to accomplish a particular task,” and is a change in words that comes from the benefits of Middle English words.
The term has been historically used to describe group activities and opportunities when farmers and neighbors help each other, such as “cutting bees,” “hashing bees,” and “apple bees.”
According to Webster, it was held in tests of spell bees, spell schools, spell matches, spell matches, spell fights, spell fights and spell combat before they were commonly referred to as “spelling bees.”
The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to hold Spelling Bee. Only nine people participated in the championship that year, honoring meeting President Calvin Coolidge before a direct confrontation. In 1941, Scripps Howard News Service took over the event and ran it with the help of local sponsors. Most of it is daily and weekly newspapers.
How do you participate in the Spelling Beacon Petition?
Students attending schools enrolled in the Scripps program are eligible to participate. Spellers usually compete at the classroom level to determine who will be taking part in the school bee. School Bee recipients decide who will proceed to the district or county competition. It feeds local or state bees for the chance to go to a spelling bee competition nationwide.
The bees in 2018 and 2019 had wildcard programs designed as an alternative pathway to honeybees for tough regional spellers. But in 2019, more than half of the bees’ 562 spellers were wildcards, many of which were younger children who were not competitive at the national level. Scripps had planned to scale back the program in 2020, but was completely removed prior to the 2021 competition.
This year Bee has 243 spellers, all of whom qualified for the merit.
The Nationals’ reserve round consists of three rounds of oral competition. Meaning (vocabulary) of two spellings and one round of multiple choice words. The quarterfinals and semifinals will continue with rounds of oral spelling and multiple choice meanings until the authorities declare the end of those events. The incorrect answer for any of these rounds is automatic removal.
The final consists of rounds of verbal competition, but authorities can activate lightning if the bee can reach the end of the allotted time and eliminate the speller who mistyped the word, and if the traditional way to reach one winner.
Speller takes 90 seconds to spell as many words as possible correctly. In Rapid Fire Tiebreaker, Spellers get the same word with lightning bolts and are isolated from each other.
All the spellers of the final round, in a word, all the contestants of that round remain in the competition, and the new round begins with the Speller competing again.
How do competitors prepare for bee spelling?
Scripps releases an annual list of hundreds of words divided into three levels of difficulty: one bee, two bee, and three bees. Once Speller masters the words on the school’s Spelling Bee Research List, they can work on the “Champion Words” list to prepare them for regional and national spelling bee competitions.
What is the winnings for Scripps National Spelling Bee?
In addition to bragging rights and trophies, the Scripps competition champion will win a $52,500 cash award and $400 worth of Encyclopedia Britannica Works.
Other finalists will receive:
2nd place: $25,000 3rd place: $15,000 4th place: $10,000 5th place: $5,000 6th place: $2,500
If two or more spellers are ranked 1st, each prize will be $50,000. However, if two or more spellers are bound to 2nd to 6th place, the prize money will be determined by the total award divided by the number of winners. For example, if three spellers are tied to fourth place, each prize is the sum of the fourth, fifth and sixth place prizes divided by three. Therefore, each speller tied to fourth place will receive $5,833.33 (($2,500 + $5,000 + $10,000 + $10,000)/3).
All participants will receive a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online and Britannica Online Premium, US Mint Proof Set and other memorial memorial items.
How to watch 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee
This year’s Spelling Bee will air on Scripps-owned Network Aeon and stream on Bounce XL, Grit Xtra, Laff More and Spellingbee.com.

The semi-finals will air on Wednesday, May 28th at 8pm ET, with the finals taking place on Thursday, May 29th at 8pm. Both competitions will be aired at Aeon.
Qualifying began at 8am on Tuesday, May 27th, with the quarterfinals beginning at 8am on Wednesday, May 28th, with rounds being held in Bounce XL in both rounds.
