Top Canadian diplomats have issued warnings about President Donald Trump’s plan to track collection of tariffs on Canadian imports, claiming the move will cause both countries to be lost.
“If you put too many barriers before trade, if there are too many taxes and tariffs before trade, you’ll reduce everything, fire people, lose jobs, lose prosperity,” UN permanent ambassador Bob Ray appeared on MSNBC Sunday.
Comments come after Trump confirmed Thursday that his 25% tariffs will come into effect on March 4th. They reason that dangerous drugs such as fentanyl are still spilling across US borders at an astonishing rate.

“The proposed tariffs scheduled to come into effect on March 4th will actually take effect as planned. Similarly, China will be charged an additional 10% tariff on that day.
Trump initially agreed to a 30-day suspension of tariff plans to allow time to negotiate how to better protect the border between Canada and the United States, but the president on Thursday claimed it wasn’t enough to stop the flow inside the windows for the 30 days.
“We cannot allow this tragedy to harm the United States,” Trump said.
A trade war between the two countries will arise as Canada moves into new leadership over the coming months after current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in January that he will finish his nine-year run.

Trudeau said he will remain in office until March 24th until the liberals can choose a new leader.
Anyone who appears as Canada’s new leader must resume negotiations with Trump over tariffs, which Ray said Canada has not seen logic.

“This is something we weathered. We have to deal with it. It costs on both sides of the border. I think that’s something that everyone has to understand,” Ray said when he appeared on MSNBC. “What is the logic that raises prices for everyone? We don’t see that logic. So we continue to persuade the US government again and think about what the costs and benefits of this trade are, and that we should work hard to reflect on the cost of profits and the lack of benefits of increasing tariffs.”
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for Fox News digital comment.
