Canadians are “frustrated” with the United States over President Donald Trump’s discussions about annexing the country along with tariffs on Canadian goods, Canada’s ambassador, Karsten Hillman, said on Sunday.
Hillman detailed the complaints that Canadians feel as neighbors while appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” saying that citizens “really don’t appreciate it.”
“They’re a bit frustrated by that kind of rhetoric,” Hillman said. “But more importantly, Canadians are frustrated with our neighbors.”
“Canadians are under attack – under economic attacks,” Hillman said of Trump’s tariffs. “And that certainly poses some challenges across Canadian society.”

The US began impose 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico on Tuesday, with an additional 10% collection on Chinese imports as Trump seeks to cut down on drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
By Thursday, Trump has been subject to a 25% tariff on most products from Canada and Mexico under the US-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for a month.

Trump’s repeated tariffs will be incurred as Canada is set to elect a new leader who will take over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has recently had a controversial relationship with Trump.

Hillman said the new Canadian leader will “priority to establish healthy, productive and productive relationships” with Trump.

“I’m sure that’s possible,” she said. “The relationship will be both, but on our part, we know that it will be a priority.”
