LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – Several brands of canned tuna sold in major stores such as Trader Joe, Costco and Heb have been recalled due to potential contamination.
Tri-Union Seafood, based in El Segundo, California, announced its recall last week. The affected tuna are sold under the brands of Genoa, Van Camp, Heb and Trader Joe, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The company has discovered that the lid of the “easy open” can be defective. The defect could cause leaks and contamination by bacteria that cause botulinum poisoning, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, the company said.
Recalled products have specific retail codes listed in the recall notification and Best Bye-by dates for 2027 and 2028 (see list below). Tuna was also sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and various independent stores in several states.
So far no illnesses have been reported, Tri-Union said. However, consumers should not eat recalled tuna. You should contact Tri-Union Seafood for more information whether to return the product to the store or throw it away for a full refund.
Botulinum is a rare but serious disease caused by the toxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. This toxin attacks the nerves of the body and can cause difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and death.
