Cahn County firefighters sent to help fight the current 5,370-acre Canyon Fire were hospitalized with serious injuries after leaping off the side of the road on Friday.
Authorities confirmed with KTLA that the firefighter whose ID was not immediately disclosed was in duties around 6:20pm when the incident within the incident (IWI) occurred.
Preliminary reports show that firefighters were driving pickup trucks in heavy-duty areas in Castaa on Canyon’s fire hotspots and patrols for flare-ups. He was crossing the Ridgeline as his truck plunged off Romero Canyon Road, plunged about 100-200 feet below, rolling down the hillside many times.
Although details are limited, KTLA’s Chris Wolfe reported that Kern County firefighters may have been kicked out of the truck during a violent plunge. Firefighters later confirmed that the crew had suffered serious injuries before paramedics airlifted him to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia.
As of Friday night, firefighters were listed in stable condition and rollover crash investigations are underway.
“This case is just another example of how dangerous it is to work in public safety,” Wolfe reported. Three other firefighters are also allegedly injured while fighting the canyon fire, but their injuries are said to be minor.
Canyon’s firefighters are furious while Kern County firefighters recover. The crew included 28% of the flames on Saturday morning, with all evacuation orders being downgraded to evacuation warnings.
