Officials said the Ventura structural fire killed one cat and injured one person on Monday afternoon.
Ventura City Fire Station units responded to a 2:18pm call reporting a fire in the 500 block of Briarwood Terrace.
Residents who were not publicly identified by staff were inside the home when the fire broke out.
The person successfully evacuated by climbing through the window, but was hurt while doing so. The VCFD did not immediately provide details, but said the victim’s injuries were minor.
According to the department, crews arrived to spot smoke coming from the windows of the detached house. Upon entering, the firefighters encountered heavy flames on the first floor.
“The rapid and aggressive attack on the fire has allowed firefighters to stop the fire from further damage to the home,” VCFD said in the release.
Officials said crews supported by animal control can save cats involved in the fire.

“Unfortunately, another cat was found to have died in the house later,” VCFD said.
Authorities tagged the house yellow and advised residents that they could not live there until the Ventura Building and Safety Department advised it was safe.
The VCFD added that the Red Cross was requested to help evacuate residents.
No other injuries have been reported.
