In honor of the birthday of the late Labour leader and civil rights activist, Los Angeles observes Cesar Chavez’s Day on Monday, March 31st.
Several agencies in the City of Los Angeles and the County will comply with holidays, including:
Los Angeles Metro Bus and Subways operate on a regular Monday schedule.
Chavez was born in Yuma, Arizona in 1927 and is a student in eighth grade who drops out of school and supports his family. He made a lasting impression on American culture with the highly successful Delano Grapevine strike from 1965 to 1970.
Along with Dolores Fuerta, he co-founded the National Association of Farm Workers, which later became United Farm Workers Union.
Chavez and UFW played a fundamental role in passing California’s Agricultural Labor Relations Act in 1975. It became the first state to grant California the right to farm workers to seek union representatives.
He passed away on April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona, at the age of 60.
Holidays have been officially observed in California, Arizona, Washington and Utah. It is an optional holiday in Colorado and Texas, and festival days in Nevada and Nebraska.
Former Governor Gray Davis signed state laws on holiday in 2000.
