The international flight from Chicago was forced to return to O’Hare International Airport after several bathrooms on the plane went “unskilled” halfway through, and investigations later revealed the reasons.

According to Air India, the Flight AI126 from Chicago on Wednesday was repurposed “back to its origin” after eight of the plane’s 12 washrooms were “unskilled” after an hour and 45 minutes after the flight.

The airline said the investigation revealed that many items, including clothing, were flushed into the toilet and “dead into the plumbing.”

“As part of the investigation into the incident, our team would like to confirm that they found polyethylene bags, rags and clothes that were washed away and clogged by the pipes. This left the bathroom unskilled,” an Air India spokesman told NBC Chicago.

The incident was discovered while the plane was flying over the Atlantic, but due to restrictions on nighttime operations at many European airports, the plane eventually returned to Chicago.

“The decision to divert was taken entirely for the comfort and safety of passengers,” the statement read.

The spokesman said all passengers were provided with hotel accommodation and alternative flight operations after diversion.

“We are fully sympathetic to passengers who are facing discomfort and whose travel plans are affected by flight appropriation,” the airline said.

The airline said he previously found items such as blankets, diapers and other waste cleaning toilets on the flight.

“We will use this opportunity to encourage passengers to use the bathroom only for the purposes they intend,” the spokesman said.
