Find your voice with your voice: They show who they are on stage.
It’s part of an annual free week-long camp by the group originally called the Chicas Rockers (now known as the Chicks Rockers).
“We try to serve transgender youth and non-binary youth as well, and we want to create a space where all young people feel comfortable and there are no limits or labels to what they want to express. I want it,” said Chicxs Rockerxs organizer, instructor, and bassist Priscilla Hernandez.
Hernandez said the group is focused on creating a welcoming space to teach campers new instruments and the power of the voice, something that has always been part of the Southeast Los Angeles community. spoke.
“I think we have this idea that punk is like British, white male majority, but a lot of the great punk pioneers were women, trans women, non-binary people. I think people,” she said.
“It’s not just music. It’s also like a form of expression that talks about politics, race, and all these issues that are happening right now,” Hernandez added.
Ten years of work by the group is currently on display at Southgate City Museum and Art Gallery.
“If you look at the walls of all the students, you could say they are campers, rockers who lift them up and give them so much knowledge. It’s great to see all of this together,” Southgate City’s Culture and Arts Coordinator Jennifer Mejia said.
For Miles Ratio, this exhibit is like a trip down memory lane. Former campers now serve as organizers and instructors.
“I felt like I was exploring my gender on my own, and camp was really liberating and allowed me to be myself in front of people I’ve never met. , you can be whoever you want to be,” Recio said. .
And just like music, the relationships that emerge at camp are not one-hit wonders.
“Actually, I’m also in a band with people from the camp,” Recio said.
The group also teaches self-defense, fashion, and how to start thinking about going to college. The next camp is scheduled to be held in the summer of 2025.
The Chicxs Rockerxs exhibit will be on display until December 3, 2024.
