The city’s police department said in a statement Saturday that the 8-year-old girl died after being seriously injured in a fireworks-related explosion at Buena Park.
Officers were patrolling the 8,000 block of Cornflower Circle area on July 4th around 9:45pm and saw “a massive fireworks explosion in the area.”
Police say homeowners placed large illegal firework displays on the streets as they began to become non-flammable towards the home. Fireworks have caused other illegal fireworks to be lit near areas where children and others exist.
The homeowner has been arrested and the charges are pending at the time of review from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the statement said.
Officers witnessed a moment when the young girl’s family was “deeply carrying their children to their residences,” and officers began an effort to save lives for the children.
The child was seriously injured in a fireworks-related explosion and was taken to the University of California Irvine Hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Her identity has not been revealed in honor of her family.
The incident is currently under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Buena Park Police Station.
Police are working in partnership with Orange County Fire Department investigators and Orange County Sheriff’s bomb squad, the statement said.
