Chiquita Canyon landfill authorities have been slapped with “more powerful mitigation measures” in years of efforts to reduce the sustained odor affecting the surrounding communities, officials announced Wednesday.
“Newly revised requirements include enhanced remote air monitoring and the use of drones for air monitoring to detect landfill emissions more quickly,” the South Coast Air Quality Control District (AQMD) announced in a news release.
Complaints about foul odors from landfills at Henry Mayo Dr., 29201 Castaic have been on the rise since mid-2023, urging demonstrations by furious residents living near the waste disposal site.
The landfill had already been ordered to limit odors reaching neighbors, but the three-day South Coast AQMD hearing last August was rife with criticism, with “no meaningful improvements,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
