The California Highway Patrol has revealed which vehicles are more likely to be stolen as they touted a significant reduction in car theft in Golden State compared to last year.
According to CHP, car thefts fell by 13.14% in 2024 compared to 2023. On average, vehicles were stolen every 2.94 minutes in California. About half of these thefts occurred in Southern California, with Los Angeles County ranked last year as the top county for most car thefts.
The agency warned that the most targeted vehicles in the 2024 theft were the most targeted.

CHP executive Ramon Duran said drivers should do everything they can to prevent a victim of a car theft.
“It starts with the community,” he said. “Make sure you keep your vehicle in a bright area. Don’t let anything of value that could seduce someone.”
In 2024, 176,230 vehicles were stolen in California, with the figure being 202,893 in 2023. This is a famous decline that has not been seen since 2019.
“One of the things that help us is the license plate reader,” Duran said. “The LPR allows you to look to the ground and law enforcement can patrol and pop up information on your screen in real time to let the vehicle know that it’s been stolen.”
