As Memorial Day weekend begins on Friday, police departments and law enforcement are looking for drivers affected across Southern California.
The California Highway Patrol will carry out an execution Monday from 6pm to 11:59pm by deploying all available officers to monitor disabled and reckless drivers.
“Our top priority is to keep people safe every day, not just during the holidays,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Dury. Our officers will be working hard to help everyone arrive safely at their destination.”
During last Memorial Day weekend’s executive operations, CHP arrested around 1,100 drivers on suspicion of driving with a similar 2023-like drunk or drug-impaired driving. 42 vehicle residents were killed in a crash investigated by the CHP and other agencies during the 2024 effort.
The maximum enforcement period coincides with the planned drinking checkpoints and saturation patrols in many municipalities, as well as the unconsolidated communities throughout the county, patrolled by sheriff’s deputies.
Duryee said seat belt safety will also be a focus as CHP will take part in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to the CHP, all drivers and passengers age 8 and older must wear seat belts in California. Children under the age of 8 must be properly secured in the child’s passenger safety seat or booster in the rear seat of the vehicle. Children under 2 pounds or less than 40 pounds or less than 40 inches must ride in a rear-facing car seat.
“As always, the CHP urges everyone to make smart choices behind the wheel. Buckle up. Stay calm. Don’t be vigilant,” he said. Your safety and the safety of others depends on it.”
The Los Angeles Police Department had planned to set up DUI checkpoints in various areas until the holiday weekend or hold saturation patrols every night, LAPD said.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office had no plans to implement any special enforcement, but deputies would be monitoring traffic violations, officials said.
