California Highway Patrol troopers will be out in force over the holidays to keep impaired and reckless drivers off the state’s roads.
The CHP said the enforcement period will last up to 30 hours and begin after 6 p.m. Tuesday and continue until midnight Jan. 1.
During this period, more police officers will be patrolling the state’s highways looking for drivers who are speeding, distracted, impaired or not wearing a seat belt.
The agency regularly conducts such enforcement periods around holidays, with more officers on patrol and sometimes longer shifts. The most recent period was Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
During the period investigated by the CHP, more than 300 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and five people died in crashes, the CHP said.
According to the CHP, during last year’s New Year’s period, CHP officers arrested 892 drivers on suspicion of drunk driving.
The agency is asking anyone who sees a potentially impaired driver on the road to call 911 and provide details including the vehicle’s description, license plate number, location and direction of travel.
