Riverside County firefighters are battling a wildfire that broke out at the bottom of the Santa Ana River Monday night. The wildfire is threatening buildings and has prompted evacuation orders.
The Clay Fire, first reported at 5 p.m. near the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Clay Street in Jurupa Valley, started as a 2-acre vegetation fire but slowly spread into dense brush. It has expanded to nearly 40 acres. acres, according to a warning from California Fire.
The blaze, which was initially visible from the city of Riverside, did not pose a threat to buildings as it burned parallel to nearby homes, but as the blaze moved westward it spread to some downwind areas, according to the wildfire tracking website Watch. An evacuation warning was issued for several areas in the area shortly after 7:30 p.m., with authorities adding that people who need time to evacuate or those with pets or livestock should evacuate immediately.
Crews at the scene requested at least 10 additional fire trucks, a bulldozer and a night-flying helicopter for water droplets as riot police worked to contain the blaze.
Aerial footage captured by Sky5 shows one of two water cannon helicopters spraying uncontrollable hotspots, while structural defense personnel work to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. He was working to prevent it.
