‘Watch Duty’ co-founder John Mills after his emergency alert app helped thousands of Southern California residents stay safe and navigate the recent devastating wildfires. , was the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award on Friday.
The free app is featured in over 20 states for active and retired firefighters, first responders and more.
Iconic actor, producer and author Steve Guttenberg presented Mills with the prestigious award at American Cinematheque’s 4th Annual Tribute to the Craft of Hollywood.
Guttenberg also praised firefighters for their heroic actions during the Palisade fire after a video showing the actor helping an abandoned car go viral online.
“Anyone can be a hero. That’s the important thing,” Mills told KTLA’s Gene Kang. “Your neighbors become first responders because there aren’t enough first responders to help.” [Guttenberg] I did what I did. “First responder” is easier to swallow than “hero.” ”
After evacuating his own home during the devastating Sonoma County fires, Mills turned to “watch duty” to help first responders protect their communities when other warning systems failed. I said I created it.
Sure enough, within the past month, the app has become a tool that will prove critical to the safety and awareness of many users during Southern California’s deadly wildfires.
“Fire brings us together,” Mills said. “I can’t let you tear us apart.”
