After a warm climate taste over the weekend, Southern Californians are expected to continue building throughout the region until at least Friday, so they need to prepare for even more heat for the week.
By Thursday and Friday, the highs during this period are expected to be 10-15 degrees above average, hitting triple digits inland deserts, including the site of the two weekends of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, crossing the inland valleys through the 90s.
David Munyan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego, said festival attendees who arrive at kickoff in the Indio can expect to fall below 100 degrees on Friday.
“The first weekend of the festival…it’s going to be a hot weekend,” Munyan said. “There’s not much shade there, so of course we want to preach hydration and brightly colored clothing at all times.”
The Inland Empire predicts that Thursday and Friday highs will be lower in the 90s, but the inland valleys of Los Angeles and Orange counties will likely enter the 80s. The coast has the most dramatic warm-ups, but the highs are still above average and are hitting the mid-’70s, predictors said.
“It will probably be about three degrees warmer every day throughout the week,” Munyan said Monday. “This week’s real hot day will be focused on Friday, Thursday.”
The high-pressure dome driving this mini heatwave is predicted to dissipate by the weekend when temperatures begin to drop, but it happens slowly in the desert.
“It still looks pretty hot on Saturday,” Munyan said of Coachella. So he expects that the finest Indians will still reach the 90s.
“It looks like No. 2 on the weekend [of the festival] It’s not that hot, but there’s still some uncertainty,” he said.
