Exclusive: Republicans in the Colorado Legislature are asking the state to stop allowing illegal immigrants to register with the state’s Medicaid program, Health First Colorado.

The program has launched this year with the possibility of illegal availability to people across the country meeting other requirements for compensation, and Republicans pitched a change in their letter to Democrat Gov. Jared Police on Wednesday. The Health First Colorado website cites state law, saying, “Don’t let your immigration status stop you from applying for health insurance.”

“Other Democrat-run states like California and Minnesota know that these policies are expensive and bad deals for Medicaid beneficiaries, so they are beginning to return policies that provide free and subsidized healthcare to illegal immigrants, even if they don’t know that one big beautiful bill law is the law.”

A new poll reveals that the majority of Californians are opposed to this important interest for illegal immigrants

“It is disappointing to see Colorado continue to double and prioritize individuals who are unlawful, even though they are negatively affecting Americans who need Medicaid the most.

As the letter points out, Colorado is one of seven states that offer public health insurance coverage that does not take into account immigrant status. California, Minnesota and Illinois are reforming their Medicaid delivery, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Minnesota and Illinois have ended availability as part of a budget transaction, and California is navigating a variety of options that could potentially freeze registrations as legislatures eliminate the budget. In California, a recent poll has revealed that nearly 60% are opposed to Medicaid against illegal immigrants, despite the law being enacted last year.

The lawmaker added that the settlement bill includes provisions that will significantly punish states that provide compensation for illegal immigrants as the Medicaid program receives both federal and state taxpayers.

“There is a new urgency to amend this policy in light of the possibility of federal laws to reduce Medicaid. [Federal Medical Assistance Percentage] An expanded population of 90% to 80% of sanctuary states using taxpayer dollars to cover illegal immigration. As you know, this change will pose a major budgetary challenge for Colorado, but only if the state continues to pursue this policy,” the letter states.

A spokesman for the Police office told Fox News Digital in a statement that the US Senate settlement bill should be completely re-done from the House version.

“The governor of Police is disappointed that these three lawmakers are trying to absorb Medicaid and drive people out of private insurance. This will raise the insurance costs for everyone who purchases commercial insurance due to the cost shift. Thanks to the vote, nearly 400,000 Coloradans have lost their health care and raise the costs for everyone else.

“Governor of Police continues to appeal to the Senate to start from scratch with this horrifying bill, including genuine protection for Medicaid and expanding key grants for those planning a health exchange so that Coloradan can afford to pay for health care.”
