The number of illegal immigrants captured along the northern border sector, which was once “overrun by illegal immigration,” fell dramatically under the Trump administration after seeing thousands of illegal crossings last year, the White House said Tuesday.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters only 54 illegal immigrants arrested last month in the Swanton sector, which grows more than 300 miles, citing US customs and border protection.

“This is a dramatic 95% drop from the over 1,000 border intersections captured in March 2024,” she said. “This is a major hotspot area that recorded more than 80% of all anxiety along the northern border during fiscal year 2024.”

In 2024, 19,222 illegal immigrants were arrested along the sector. Immigration was welcomed by 97 countries, said at the time, chief patrol agent Robert Garcia, the sector.

Officials said concerns have reached more than the last 17 years. In 2020, agents assigned to the sector arrested 574 illegal immigrants, followed by 365 the following year.

More than 19,000 illegal immigrants were caught up in the Swanton division of the U.S. Border Patrol along the US-Canadian border in 2024, officials said Wednesday. Only 54 people were arrested in March 2025, the White House said Tuesday. (US Border Patrol)

The Swanton sector includes 24,000 square miles and Vermont. Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Herkimer County, New York. Coos, Grafton and Carroll counties, New Hampshire. It is also adjacent to Quebec and Ontario Canada.

Garcia on Monday called the 1,109 anxiety in March 2024 and the difference between last month “a tough contrast.”

“Our mission of border security will never stop. People are still illegally smuggling humans and smuggling into the country,” he wrote in X.

Under Trump, illegal immigrant catches fell 99.99%. This has declined compared to the Biden administration, where 189,604 immigrants were released to the United States in December 2023 at the height of the border crisis.

In February, Border Patrol agents caught and released only 20 illegal immigrants, she added.
