Congressman Mike Garcia conceded Monday and congratulated political newcomer George Whiteside, who is vying to represent California’s 27th Congressional District.
NBC News predicted that Mr. Whiteside would lead with 51.2% of voters’ support, compared to incumbent Mr. Garcia’s 48.8%. As of Monday night, more than 288,000 votes had been counted.
“I spoke with George Whiteside this evening and congratulated him. I will ensure a smooth transition of the outstanding voter litigation work package to him and his team,” Garcia said in a statement. Ta.

The district, which includes Ventura County and parts of northern Los Angeles County including Lancaster, Palmdale and Santa Clarita, was one of the seats Democrats had hoped to flip.
More than 40% of registered voters in the district identified as Democrats, and 30% identified as Republicans, according to California’s Secretary of State.
Mr. Garcia was a Navy fighter pilot and a U.S. defense contractor before entering politics, while Mr. Whitesides was a former NASA chief of staff and CEO of Virgin Galactic.
