Trump administration and Republican lawmakers have denounced Massachusetts Democrats and Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz for comparing immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) operations with the Gestapo, a police officer in Nazi Germany.
“When you compare the old films of the Gestapo grabbing people off the streets of Poland, and you compare them to those nondescript thugs… it does look like a Gestapo operation,” Lynch said at the House Oversight Committee hearing on Thursday where Walz, Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker were facing questions over their state’s immigration policies, particularly on compliance with federal authorities.
The White House’s quick response accounts accused the statement of “disgusting.”

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz. accused Lynch’s comments of being “sick.”
“Comparing legal policing by our country’s brave law enforcement officers with the Gestapo in Nazi Germany is a disease. Borders and massive deportation are an issue of 80/20, but Democrats refuse to abandon the signal of virtue. Democrats, illegal aliens > Americans, Arizona Senators posted on X.
“This is the type of dangerous rhetoric that incites violence across the country,” says the X-account at RNC Research.
Waltz was also criticized at a hearing for similar comments about ICE in the University of Minnesota Law School’s opening speech last month.

“I start with a flashing red light. Donald Trump’s modern Gestapo is scooping people up on the streets,” Waltz said at the time. “They are in unmarked vans, wearing masks and being shipped to foreign torture dungeons. They have no chance to start defenses. They don’t even have the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones. They grabbed them by masked agents, shoved into those vans, and disappeared.”

R-Minn. Rep. Tom Emmer directly called for his comments, including posts from May 2018. Waltz said he “supports policies that prevent law enforcement from enforcing federal laws that everyone knows are broken.”
“Would you consider your dangerous inflammatory rhetoric a problem given the attacks on ice agents in Los Angeles over the weekend?” Emmer asked.

“So it makes me sad to refuse to express regret from comparing ice to Nazis,” he later added, saying that the ice agent is “a brave American.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reflects Emmer’s sentiment.

“I’m tired of the comments from Governor Waltz comparing Ice Agents to the Nazi Gestapo. Ice Agents have put their lives and safety on the line to arrest illegal aliens for crimes committed in our country,” DHS posted on X.
The Trump administration’s ice arrest goal and Democratic leaders continue to face conflict, particularly when it comes to compliance with federal immigration enforcement in states and local governments. ICE now has a daily goal of illegally arresting 3,000 people across the country.
