Social media conservatives denounced Sen. Alex Padilla of D-Calif for pausing a Homeland Security press conference held in Los Angeles on Thursday despite the Senate being in session.
Padilla was kicked out of the event and DHS secretary Christy Noem said she didn’t know him personally.

Political tensions between California leaders and the Trump administration have been attached to immigration and customs enforcement activities in the city, prompting protests and riots in the area.
President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to protect ice officers despite the firm opposition of Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass. Newsom said the move was “unprecedented and threatened the core of our democracy.”
“Donald Trump is acting like a tyrant, not a president. We ask the court to immediately stop these illegal actions,” he added.

“Senator Padilla is currently in Los Angeles and is in charge of overseeing Congressional federal activities across Los Angeles and California,” his office said in a statement.
“He was in the federal building to receive a briefing with General Gilott, listening to a press conference for Director Noem. He tried to ask a question to his secretary, and was forced to be removed by federal agents, forced to the ground and handcuffed.
DHS Chief NOEM accused lawmakers of “convicting a felony” at the Newark Ice facility: “They should be condemned.”

After the incident, Padilla’s office said he was not in police custody. DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that Noem and Padilla had a meeting after the brawl. The secretary confirmed to Fox News that the meeting had worked and the two exchanged phone numbers.

“At a press conference held today at the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, Sen. Alex Padilla was detained by a member of the US Secret Service, assigned to the details of Secretary Noem when it became destructive while the formal remarks were being made,” the FBI said Thursday.
“At this point, Secret Service agents were supported by FBI police in Los Angeles. Sen. Padilla was not wearing a Senate security pin.
