The convicted rapist serving a life sentence in the California prison system was killed Sunday when he was allegedly attacked by another inmate at the Los Angeles County Jail.

Renee Rodriguez, 51, was attacked in a common area of California State Prison LAC in Lancaster around 7:15pm on Sunday, according to the California Department of Amendments and Rehabilitation.

An altercation involving Rodriguez and another inmate was spotted by prison officials, leading to the deployment of tear gas and other non-lethal weapons to disband the fight, officials said.

Renee Rodriguez, 51, is shown in this mug shot taken on May 25, 2022 (California Department of Corrections and Department of Rehabilitation).

Rodriguez suffered multiple stab wounds from an improvised weapon and was taken to a prison medical facility for immediate medical treatment. He was then taken by ambulance to LA County Hospital, at which point he was declared dead by the ambulance.

The man accused of attacking him was identified as Kenneth Wilson, a 30-year-old convicted murderer who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Wilson has been involved in the CDCR system since February 2020 following his first-degree murder conviction in Riverside County. He was additional convictions related to assault, robbery and possession of contraband while incarcerated.

Kenneth Wilson, 30, is shown in this mug shot taken on November 6, 2024 (California Department of Amendment and Rehabilitation Department)

Rodriguez was incarcerated since May 2001 after being convicted of armed or violence in Rape County. He was previously convicted of possessing and manufacturing improvised weapons while incarcerating in other prisons in the state.

Rodriguez served a life sentence with the possibility of parole, but the actual possibility that he would be released is unknown.

CDCR officials say the attack is being investigated as a murder, and Wilson has been placed in a restrictive home for the time being. Movements are also restricted in common areas where the attack occurred.

The Los Angeles County Clinic office will determine the exact cause of death, CDCR officials say the inspector’s California office has been notified of the in-audit death.

According to the CDCR, the Lancaster area prisons live in the minimum and maximum security facilities with approximately 2,900 prisoners.
