R-Texas Sen. John Cornyn – who is heading out for reelection next year and facing major challenges from Lone Star Attorney General Ken Paxton – told NBC News he spoke to President Donald Trump about his potential support.
“I’ve told him many times, and he’s not ready to support it,” Cornyn told the outlet. “I think if we start advertising and close the poll gap, he’s worthy of supporting it, but I can’t wait.”
“I pointed it to him and he knows this, if he supports me, the race will be over,” the senator said according to the outlet.

Cornyn has spent more than 20 years in the Senate. Prior to taking office in late 2002, he served as Texas Attorney General, which Paxton currently occupys.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Matt Mackowiak, senior adviser to Cornyn Campaign, said “President Trump’s support is the strongest support in modern Republican history.”
John Cornyn has gained support from Tim Scott, but John Rich calls Cornyn “Lindsey Graham of Texas.”
“Senator Cornyn and President Trump are good friends and close allies, and Senator Cornyn is proud to vote 99.2% of the time while in office. We respect the president’s time to make decisions, and in the meantime we focus on our first campaign, our victory campaign, as Senator Cornyn always has.”
Fox News Digital also contacted the White House and Paxton comment campaign.

Paxton’s wife, Texas Sen. Angela Paxton, is a Republican, declared in a social media post last week that she “sought a divorce on biblical basis” “after 38 years of marriage.”
