Corona High School solidified its place in baseball history as the first high school to select three players out of the top 50 picks in Sunday’s Major League Baseball Draft.
In the 2025 MLB draft, coronavirus right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez was chosen sixth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates, while infielder Billy Carlson came in 10th place for the Chicago White Sox. They became the first pair of high school teammates selected in the top 10 draft.
Before the selection, only 13 university teammate groups were drafted in the top 10 draft.
“Obviously, the Big League has been a longer season, mentally challenging and physically challenging,” Hernandez said. “It’s the end of the day, so you can just have fun and go out and compete.”
The public school completed a record-breaking night with Short Stop Brady Bell, the 32nd pick, son of Dodgers’ third-bass coach Dinoe Bell, the Milwaukee Brewers’ choice.
“I know I’m leaving the house, so now I’m counting every moment with my family and preparing to leave for myself,” Billy Carlson said. “It’s going to be exciting.”
It features only two other opportunities that feature high schools with three teammates selected for the top 100 pick. The 2019 International Management Group Academy Boarding School in Bradenton, Florida included former Radogers Kendall Williams and Moses Lake High School in 1999.
In this year’s draft, Corona High School was stacked with talent ranked within the top 150, including four prospects: Hernandez (No. 3), Carlson (No. 7), Ebel (No. 64) and Echin Bingaman (No. 150).
Public schools have previously produced MLB talents such as former Dodger pitcher Joe Kelly and current San Francisco Giants pitcher Tristan Beck.
This season, the high school was the dominant force, moving on to 28-3, ending with an upset defeat by St. John Bosco in the Scholastic Federation Southern Section semi-finals between California.
