Thousands of Costco employees across the country voted Sunday to authorize a strike if a contract is not reached by the end of the month.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said Costco “failed to negotiate constructively and refused to make a fair contract offer that reflected the company’s record profits,” resulting in an 85% He said it was approved by a narrow margin.
The current agreement, which covers more than 18,000 Costco employees, expires on January 31st.
“Our members have said loud and clear that Costco needs a fair contract or it will be held accountable,” Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien said. “Costco’s greedy management has less than two weeks left to do the right thing. If they refuse, there will be no one to blame but themselves when members go on strike. .”
The Teamsters say Costco has increased its net profit by 135% since 2018 but has refused to meet demands for “fair wages and benefits.”
Strike authorization votes are often used as a bargaining tactic by unions and do not mean a strike will take place.
Costco has not released a statement regarding the vote approval.
