Eligible California states achieved enrollment records prior to the program’s open enrollment deadline.
More than 1.8 million people are enrolled in the state’s health insurance marketplace. Approximately 143,686 Californians have enrolled for the first time and more than 1.6 million have renewed their coverage.
Nearly half of the new registrants came from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, bringing the total to 68,095.

This is a record number even though interest rates have increased by nearly 10% this year. California Executive Director Jessica Altman said the upcoming increase is due to factors such as rising pharmacy costs, labor shortages and rising wages in the health care industry.

Still, most enrollees receive financial assistance from the government, which typically protects them from annual premium increases. However, those who are not eligible may be responsible for the full cost of the rate hike.
“We understand that the most financial assistance ever provided through the Affordable Care Act will be available here in California in 2025 for all uninsured Californians. Now is the time to take advantage of this financial assistance and start the new year off with affordability – branded health insurance and peace of mind for you and your family,” said Altman. said in a statement.
Residents can sign up for Covered California here during the open enrollment period. Public registration ends on January 31, 2025.
