Firefighters were fighting a burning fire that erupted on the steep hillside terrain of Para on Friday evening, urging evacuation in northern San Diego County, authorities said.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the flame, known as the Henderson Fire, broke out near Henderson Road and Para Mission Road around 5:45pm, burning 183 acres in two hours.
Evacuation orders have been issued for the surrounding hillside communities where many members of Pala Mission Indians live. According to Cal Fire. Evacuation warnings are also effective in the Riverside County area just north of the San Diego County Line.
A temporary shelter has been set up in the Para Casino parking lot.
“It’s burning in the grass and brush areas that start to enter the gentle hills and very mountainous areas,” Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shutt told the San Diego Union Tribune. “The fire runs much faster and the goal is to move it away from the hillside.”
Shoots informed the outlet that initial response to the flames would include an aircraft and more than 100 firefighters.
According to Cal Fire, the flame was 5% contained at 8:45pm, with most activities coming from the eastern side.
Road closures are effective along Henderson Road, Paramitted Road, State Route 76 and Maggie Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Saturday’s weather could pose challenges to crew efforts to curb the flames. The National Weather Service is forecasting a 91-degree high, with gusts of wind up to 25 mph in the region.
