The treehouse, which has towered so much in Sherman Oaks neighborhood for over 20 years, is scheduled to be demolished on Saturday after interacting with the man who built it.
The Simpsons longtime producer Rick Polizzi has said goodbye to his front yard treehouse. The impending decimation was the culmination of years of interaction with the city, declaring the structure an Accessory Housing Unit (ADU).
The Treehouse was built in 2000 for Polizzi’s two daughters. As they grew up, it became an attraction as other neighborhood kids enjoyed the tree house.
The city closed the treehouse in 2017 after receiving complaints from some neighbors. Since then, Polizzi said he has done his best to obtain permission and to comply with the city’s requirements. The latest final blow to his creation comes after the city said it urged homeowners to pre-trial trial for the crime and ultimately forced him to leave.
“We’re going to landfills and then we’re cutting fees, but we’re already spending over $50,000,” he said. “Going to court is another $20-30,000. The city said they’re chasing me for their court costs, so I’m not doing that. I just have to take it down and do it.”
Polizzi said that community members visited the Treehouse until its end of the event.
“It’s really weird because everyone gets a lot of joy from it,” Polizzi said of the city’s attitude towards the Treehouse. “It’s sad to see that it’s not really necessary. It’s just sad because it’s been in operation for 24 years and never had an incident. My daughter was upset. I didn’t think they were that upset.”
The crew was scheduled to begin demolishing the treehouse on Saturday morning.
